Session 3: Building Better Groups: Foundations of Effective Group Facilitation

Description

Group facilitation is often seen as one of the trademark services for SUD treatment and yet effective group facilitation skills can take years of practice to develop. For many this skill development journey became more complex as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic as a shift to telehealth or other social distancing measures impacted how we communicate within a group setting. This 1-hour webinar will cover information that is foundational to developing and maintaining effective group facilitation skills. The presentation will compare different methods of group facilitation to identify effective methods of creating dynamic and engaging groups across settings while also promoting better client outcomes. Group facilitators of all experience levels are encouraged to attend.

Objectives:

After attending this webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the different group types as well as the ways in which group leadership is differs with each type.
  • Understand different practices to support ongoing development of group facilitation skills.
  • Describe and understand group facilitator interventions to promote cohesion between group members regardless of setting.
  • Use SAMHSA’s TIP 41 as a resource for continued learning and skill development.
