Virtual YMHFA Training Course

April 25th, 2024, 9 am - 3:30 pm PDT

WHY YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID?

Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches adults how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among children and adolescents ages 12-18. You’ll build the skills and confidence you need to reach out and provide initial support to young people who are struggling. You’ll also learn how to help connect them to appropriate support.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

The course will teach you how to apply the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE):

Assess for risk of suicide or harm.

Listen nonjudgmentally.

Give reassurance and information.

Encourage appropriate professional help.

Encourage self-help and other support strategies.

TRAINING COSTS AND BENEFITS

The cost for OCBH members and community partners to participate in YMHFA training is $120. This cost covers the course materials, technology requirements, and staffing costs for OCBH. CEUs from MHACBO are awarded through OCBH for Behavioral Health professionals. Please email Heather Ray with inquiries about other possible continuing education credits: [email protected]

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Heather Ray and Kathy Turner started their partnership in training back in August of 2023. Kathy has been a trainer and educator for Clackamas County Behavioral Health Division for nearly 10 years. Heather is the Director of Projects for OCBH and is active in her community with PTA and coaching. Together, Kathy and Heather hope to increase the number of adults trained to help youth in our region and beyond who may be suffering from mental health or substance use challenges.
